Your Wellness Guide Creator
Hi, I am Sharni.
The first time I stepped foot on the ‘Islands of the Gods’ was in 2010. I had recently signed my divorce papers and set out on a nine-month journey of yoga and self-healing. I had spent two months in India, reconnecting with my body and spirit at the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala, and I was now coming to rest my heart and soul in Bali.
Yeah! You might recognise the script. I was on my own Eat Pray Love journey. Except Julia Roberts was yet to wow the world with her travel adventures. The movie was only released after I left Bali. I remember watching the premiere on my next adventure, a few months later, in Byron Bay, thinking, “Julia Roberts is living my life!”
After the movie Eat Pray Love, so much changed for Bali—especially Ubud.
Women all over the world gave themselves permission to travel alone and descended on the island in search of the Ketuts and Wayans who could heal their hearts, stressed-out minds, weary bodies, and lost souls.
In 2013, as Bali became synonymous with healing and wellness, I began running Women's Wellness Retreats to the islands while managing my wellness business in Cape Town. Each return retreat to Bali reminded me of its growth as a wellness destination.
Then I had my ‘dark night of the soul’ experience (my second one!) and completely burnt out from running too many wellness companies! So, after my last of three retreats in 2018, I decided to stay in Bali. I officially relocated and focused on my own healing and wellness journey.
The world then went through its own ‘dark night of the soul’ experience, and COVID stopped all travellers in their tracks. By this stage, Bali was already my new home, and so I stayed on the island and got to experience a version of Bali that I don’t think we will ever see again—a quiet place without tourists. It was heavenly, as we had the whole of Indonesia to ourselves. But it was also eerily haunting. The island was breathing again, yes, but the people were suffering. They needed their livelihood from tourism back. So, it was an absolute blessing when Bali opened up to the world again. However, after two years of isolation, much had changed.
Since 2022, when Bali reopened, you can visibly see the changes—and the rice fields disappearing—before your eyes. You can feel the energy of the island shifting, with obnoxious travellers overtaking the locals. The reopening of Bali revealed visible changes, with overtourism impacting the landscape and local culture.
Many aspiring visitors have questions about these changes, and it's essential to share current insights. The Bali of today is different; beloved restaurants may have closed, and familiar yoga studios may have changed. Yet, despite these transformations, the beautiful, soulful essence of Bali and its people remains.
This Bali Wellness Travel Guide was created to help you navigate these changes while honouring the local culture and environment. You’ll discover hidden gems, local accommodations, and authentic experiences that support communities and sustainable small businesses.
With nearly two decades in the wellness industry and years spent living in Bali, I offer this guide as your gateway to the island's best-kept secrets.
It’s time to explore Bali mindfully—discover tranquillity, engage with the vibrant wellness community, and uncover the magic that makes Bali a premier destination for conscious travellers.
